The MA Interim Show at the Herbert Read Gallery on 17-28th April 2025 offered a thought-provoking exploration of form, materiality, and perception, featuring the work of Artphoria founders Crystal Evans, Helen Papa, and Sue Cavanagh. Each artist brought a distinct yet complementary approach, creating an immersive dialogue between sculpture, installation, and graphic works.
Crystal Evans blended sculpture, poetry, and light, crafting ethereal installations that explored presence, absence, and fragility. Her use of light as both material and metaphor infused her pieces with an almost ghostly resonance, inviting viewers into a layered sensory experience.
Helen Papa worked across 2D and 3D sculpture and graphic forms, experimenting with structure and spatial tension. Her pieces played with surface and depth, offering shifting perspectives depending on the viewer’s position.
Sue Cavanagh presented sculptural installations in mixed media, incorporating wood, acrylic, and a reflective surface to prompt questions about material excavation in the face of sustainable choices.
Together, these three artists created an exhibition that was both visually and conceptually engaging. The show was a testament to contemporary practice, pushing boundaries between material and meaning while offering an evocative and immersive experience for visitors.
